Zero Waste Initiatives at Hampshire College
In March of this year, we traveled to Boston to begin producing the Fairware x Post Landfill Action Network (PLAN) video series. Throughout this series, we’ll be highlighting Universities and Colleges and the efforts being taken by student champions for zero waste campuses. First up is Hampshire College.
Hampshire College is based in Amherst, Massachusetts, and is known to be among the most innovative colleges in the country. It has earned a STARS Gold rating from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), which recognized the College’s sustainability achievements across academics, operations, leadership, and more.
Hampshire College is also a PLAN member school that supports a network of students developing waste reduction initiatives to help push the student-led zero waste movement forward everyday.
In this episode, we had the pleasure of meeting with some students who help define the culture at Hampshire College. We talk with Serene, Hazel and Joseph, food waste and recycling changemakers to highlight a compost program that they have helped evolve over the years into a community initiative run by peers on campus.
This program was developed with close support from PLAN and now helps Hampshire College save money and resources, improve its soil, and reduce its overall impact on the environment.
We love seeing students passionate about sustainability and making a positive impact on their surroundings, so we hope you find this first episode as inspiring as we did. Here are just a few snippets from the video that we loved, but be sure to check out the full video too!
“It’s unique because it’s run by students and it’s done through a group of peers on campus. It’s not an outside force telling us what to do!” – Hazel
“I really like composting because you can see the outcome of it. You know what’s happening with your waste.” – Serene
Over the coming weeks, we’ll be releasing more episodes highlighting changemakers like Hazel, Serene, and Joseph from Hampshire College, by showing what they do and why. Stay tuned to keep updated on this series, and get ready to be inspired by students across the United States.
